The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is revamping their cards to do away with Social Security Numbers to combat fraud and illegal use. The new Medicare cards will no longer use Social Security Numbers but will use a randomly selected number. CMS will be mailing new cards beginning April 2018. There will also be a 21 month transition period where providers will be able to use either card. Best practice will be to update to the new Medicare cards as the patients come to the office. Also, scan new Medicare cards into the patient files in case issues arise.
